Chapter Thirteen

When they arrived at the campsite, Austin watched as Eve flung her bag off her back and immediately walked over to the lookout.

“Holy crap on a freaking cracker,” Eve’s voice was only slightly above a whisper as she stared out into the distance, admiring the view. “I kinda get why people do this now.”

“Only kinda?” Austin chuckled, dropping his pack on the ground before walking over to Eve. His right arm slinked around her hip, pulling her into his side.

“It’s a lot of work, but I’ll admit this is pretty breathtaking.”

You’re breathtaking.

Austin bit his tongue to stop himself from saying the words. As Eve admired their view, he couldn’t help but admire her.

Maybe it was the fresh air, maybe it was their hike, but there was something almost magical about the moment. Eve was way beyond beautiful and seeing her among one of the places he loved the most made his heart pound against his chest.

Austin pulled her tighter to his side as he closed his eyes, taking a deep breath of the fresh air. If there was a way he could, he’d sell his soul to never let the moment end. And as the sun began to set, he felt a sense of peace he didn’t know he’d been longing for his whole life.

These were the moments artists strived to convey with their paintings or drawings. The writers of the world tried to replicate with their words.

These were the moments that could change the world.

As his chest tightened, Austin shifted, doing his best to get control of his emotions. There was something about this that was more than he knew.

Austin kissed the top of Eve’s head, pulling her in for another hug before moving back to his bag.

It was moments like this that could change your life forever. And even though there was a part of him that desperately wanted that, he wouldn’t risk it.

Instead, he’d blame the fresh mountain air.

Yeah, let’s go with that. Fresh mountain air.

He’d gotten pretty good at lying to himself lately.

Austin shook his head as he knelt and unzipped his pack. The hike in had been quite entertaining and even though there were parts of it he knew Eve hated, he also saw the joy in her eyes when they’d come across a patch of wildflowers or a funny-looking mushroom they’d stumbled upon along the journey.

In a weird way, it was like experiencing hiking for the first time all over again. And being able to watch Eve explore nature made his stomach do this weird flutter thing.

It felt right.

It felt like home.

It felt like the one piece of him that had been missing was finally fulfilled as he watched Eve in wonderment as she took in their surroundings.

This really is what I’ve been missing. Eve— Ahh, nope wait. Back up. Let’s shove that back into the box.

Austin cursed himself, pissed his mind was once again going down that path. And here he thought getting away from her apartment would help calm those feelings? Austin should’ve known better.
